Mobile Platform Robots

A mobile platform (wheeled or tracked) robot is the simplest mobile platform to run, program, and maintain. It covers floors and paved ground efficiently, and it gives students and developers an open base to build on. Stokes Robotics sells each one two ways, as the base robot or as a Stokes package with our secondary development added for your program.

Stokes Robotics mobile platform robot packages

Each package adds our secondary development to a proven mobile platform: software, setup, and support for classroom instruction or ROS2 development.

LIMO

LIMO

LIMO is the Stokes Robotics package built on the AgileX LIMO, a ROS 2 classroom robot with four motion modes, set up for your program with curriculum and training options.

Stokes Robotics packages built on Unitree robots

The right choice depends on how much of the software your team plans to build itself.

Stokes package

The same hardware with our secondary development added, so your team starts with a working setup instead of a bare platform. For development work, see our ROS2 development kits.

Packages pair well with our STEMBOTICS curriculum license and onsite setup and training.

Base Unitree robot

The robot as AgileX Robotics ships it. AgileX platforms are designed as development bases with ROS support, so research teams often buy the base robot and build their own software on top.

Our LIMO and Scout Mini ROS2 Kit packages are built on the AgileX LIMO and Scout Mini. AgileX Robotics manufactures the hardware, and Stokes Robotics is the secondary developer. Read how we build on Unitree.

What to consider when you buy a mobile platform robot

The drive type decides where a mobile platform robot can go. Everything else follows from the job.

What to compareWhy it mattersAsk this
Drive typeDifferential and skid-steer robots turn in place. Ackermann steering handles like a car at speed. Tracks grip soft and rough ground. Four-wheel steering moves sideways in tight spaces. What surfaces will it cross, and how tight are the turns?
Indoor or outdoorOutdoor work calls for ground clearance and a weather rating from the manufacturer. Will it run in rain, dust, mud, or heat?
Payload and mountingSensors, arms, and cargo add weight and need mounting rails and power. What will the robot carry, and what will you mount on it?
Software and ROSROS and ROS2 support decides which tools, drivers, and simulations your team can use.Which ROS version does your program use?
Size and transportDesktop robots fit a classroom shelf. Larger platforms need storage space and a way to move them.Where will it be stored, and does it travel between rooms or sites?
Runtime and batteriesRuntime changes with payload, terrain, and speed. Spare batteries keep a class or test day going. How long does one session run? See the battery and controller upgrade.
Training and supportStudents and new developers need a starting point, not just hardware.Do you need onsite or online training?

Performance figures on our product pages are published by the manufacturer and measured under its test conditions. Real-world results change with load, surface, temperature, and use.

Where mobile platform robots are used

Mobile platform robots are the most common starting point for teaching and development.

K-12 and CTE programs

Our team has written STEM curriculum since 2005 and robotics curriculum since 2013. A desktop robot like LIMO lets a whole class learn navigation, mapping, and code on real hardware.

Robots for education

Higher education and research

Open platforms with ROS support give labs a base for navigation, manipulation, and autonomy research.

ROS2 development kits

Manufacturing and industrial

Wheeled and tracked platforms carry sensors and payloads on repetitive routes across floors, yards, and rough ground.

Robots for manufacturing and industrial facilities

Buying for corrections, law enforcement, or security? Most of our public safety packages are built on quadruped robots. See robots for corrections.

Mobile platform robot FAQ

Answers to the questions buyers ask most.

Ask a different question
What is a mobile platform robot?

A mobile platform robot is a robot that moves on wheels or tracks instead of legs. It is simpler to run and maintain than a legged robot, and it serves as a base for sensors, arms, and software. The wheeled robots we sell are manufactured by AgileX Robotics.

How much does a mobile platform robot cost?

Price depends on the model, whether you buy the base robot or a Stokes package, and which add-ons you choose, such as curriculum or training. Starting prices appear on each product page. A quote confirms the final configuration and cost.

Can you program a mobile platform robot?

Yes. Our Stokes packages give your team a working setup to start from, so students and developers can write code on day one instead of configuring a bare platform. How much you change depends on your goals. Classroom lessons, ROS2 development, and industrial prototypes each call for different tools and training.

AgileX designs its platforms as development bases with ROS support. Tell us what you plan to build when you request a quote, and we will match you to the right robot or package.

Which drive type do I need?

Match the drive to the ground. Differential and skid-steer robots turn in place and suit floors and paved areas. Ackermann steering handles like a car and suits longer outdoor routes. Tracks grip mud, gravel, and uneven ground. Four-wheel steering moves sideways in tight spaces.

Do you manufacture these robots?

Unitree or Agile X manufactures the hardware. Stokes Robotics is a distributor for Unitree and the secondary developer and integrator for our packages.

What is the difference between mobile platform, quadruped, and humanoid robots?

A mobile platform robot is the simplest to run and covers flat ground efficiently. A quadruped robot walks on four legs and handles stairs and rough terrain. A humanoid robot walks on two legs and works in spaces built for people.

Can I buy a mobile platform robot without a Stokes package?

Yes. Every base robot in this category can be purchased on its own. A Stokes package adds our secondary development for a specific use.
